On my machine, the driver uses up to 10% of the CPU just to play MP3s. It sounds like you have the same RealTek ALC655 sound chipset on that motherboard that I do, and it's one of the worst ones as far as CPU usage goes. You might want to try throwing the Audigy in anyway. I tried all of the available sound settings, and all of the available hardware acceleration settings in the control panel, but nothing helped. I had problems with the sound, but not the ones you describe- crackling and popping in the voice tracks, and cutscenes fading out before the person was done talking. I have virtually the same system as you, except for the amount of RAM and HD size.
